Rights of Nature

On 29 April 2021 Blue Mountains City Council became the first Council and government entity in Australia to commit to integrating Rights of Nature (RON) principles into its operations and practices.
The Planetary Health Centre recognises that all life is interconnected and that ‘we are nature’. We are learning how to Care for Country from Indigenous Cultures, from contemporary science, and from our many communities: including our more-than-human community members.
On 5 October 2024 we hosted our inaugural World Animal Day event and our Planetary Health Bushcare program is held on the first Saturday of the month.
On 11 November 2024 we held a workshop with law students from the University of Sydney and the World Heritage Institute to address how Rights of Nature can be progressed and implemented.
Blue Mountains City Council and the Planetary Health Initiative’s work on the Rights is featured as a case study in Earth Law Futures August 2024 which can be read here
We are building resources around the best ways to implement the Rights of Nature and welcome researchers, volunteers and interns to join us to accelerate this work.
