Recycling glasses

If there’s one thing I haven’t needed for quite some time it’s sunglasses. So today I took another opportunity to declutter and make sure resources are being used to their highest capacity, by sorting through all my sunglasses and reading glasses and only keeping what I really need.

The rest will be going to the Glasses Recycling Program at our nearest Specsavers store on Thursday, when it’s predicted the rain will ease. This nationwide glasses recycling program, in partnership with Lions Recycle For Sight, delivers quality glasses and sunglasses to people in need overseas.

I’ve put them in a tub outside my front door at 101 Wentworth St Blackheath (next to the box of pens and markers for recycling), so if you need a pair of sunglasses come and grab them, or if you’d like to drop your own surplus off, please do so by Thursday.

Join #AYearInADay Citizen Science Project to see if we can all inspire one another to do more to restore planetary health

We’d love you to collaborate with us and share any actions you take to restore planetary health in the comments below or on our social media. While we welcome you to share ANY ACTION you take to inspire others, we’ll be recording NEW or EXTRA actions that people take as part of our tally, because we’re trying to inspire one another to do more than we’re already doing. Feel free to copy some of the actions our participants have been sharing – the action only needs to be NEW for you. Let us know if other people are influenced by your posts, or ours, so that we can measure outcomes of this project. To leave a comment on this blog you’ll need to enter your name and email address.

Our first step is to record 365 new actions. Our second step will be to aim for 365 new actions in one single day. Imagine if we could do it every day of the year! You can subscribe to receive a daily action from us here

Just wondering if it would be more convenient and helpful to have a one-stop shop for all these great recycling options, rather than visiting various shops and organisations, which are often out of the Mountains. The more convenient and easy to become involved in an initiative, then it is more likely that people will be interested. Just a thought!

That’s an excellent point! At the moment different ‘deals’ are being done with different companies and it’s mostly related to the Extender Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme in which companies take responsibility for recycling a product they create eg. Officeworks sells pens and markers, so they recycle pens and markers. It’s why I’ve created a little drop-off point in Blackheath because a lot of people don’t get down to Penrith. Sue from Landcare is seeing if we can get something set up more locally! Hopefully systems will eventually merge that make it easier for everyone. It’s great, at least, that Council is recycling so many things at their Resource Recovery Centres.
