Kindlehill School, Wellness Wednesdays at the Planetary Health Centre

28 May – 25 June

As part of Kindlehill’s Wellness Wednesday program, students in Years 9 and 10 are participating in a service-based learning opportunity at the Blue Mountains Planetary Health Centre. The students are engaging in volunteering activities that support both community wellbeing and environmental sustainability.

In their first week we shared with them how to protect their homes and communities from future fires and they helped us lay down a metre wide area of gravel below our Sprinkler Demonstration wall. This is part of a showcase to educate the community on how to protect their homes in fire seasons.

This initiative is designed to support the following key learning outcomes:

  1. Develop a sense of wellbeing beyond the self by contributing meaningfully to the Blue Mountains community.
  2. Learn foundational skills in resilience and self-sufficiency, based on permaculture principles. Liz Bastian, program lead at the Planetary Health Centre, is one of Australia’s leading permaculture educators.
  3. Gain valuable service experience which students may include in future resumes and post-school pathways.
