Love Local Growers

Our wonderful growers are facing a second year of difficult weather conditions as they work to bring us fresh and healthy, locally-grown food.

I’ve struggled with my home garden, and it’s been a hard year too at Blackheath Community Farm, so I was delighted, as my NEW ACTION for today, to take receipt of my first order from Megalong Grown. During this pandemic, what a boon it has been for Mountains residents to be able to place an order and have fresh veggies delivered straight to their door – often by the grower themselves. Order from Megalong Grown by 7pm Sunday, the produce is picked Monday morning, and then it’s delivered fresh Monday afternoon. What could be healthier than that!

I was late in putting in my order but was thrilled to get a bunch of beautiful radishes, crunchy cucumbers, rhubarb and aromatic fresh dill, which will become the basis of tonight’s dinner. As well as 6 jars of Megalong Grown’s fantastic Sauerkraut – 3 with white cabbage and dill, and 3 Spicy Wongbok Kraut which includes wongbok, cabbage, onion, garlic and chillies.

I just love planning meals around what’s in season and available. The premise behind Community Supported Agriculture is that we all share the difficulties our growers face and adapt our diets to whatever is able to be grown at a certain point in time.

This year I haven’t managed to grow good rhubarb, cucumbers, dill or cabbages so I’m thrilled to be able to source them from our Megalong growers.

While Megalong Grown deliver from Mt Victoria to Hazelbrook (and you can arrange to pick up in the Megalong) you can find other local growers featured in the Mtns Eco local produce directory.

You can also meet other growers and help build local food security by volunteering at any of the Community Gardens in the Blue Mountains below, or checking out the Edible Garden Trail on the 5th and 6th March.

NB. Ring ahead for the Community Gardens to check Covid opening times.

Join #AYearInADay Citizen Science Project to see if we can all inspire one another to do more to restore planetary health

We’d love you to collaborate with us and share any actions you take to restore planetary health in the comments below or on our social media. While we welcome you to share ANY ACTION you take to inspire others, we’ll be recording NEW actions that people take as part of our tally, because we’re trying to inspire one another to do more than we’re already doing. Feel free to copy some of the actions our participants have been sharing – the action only needs to be NEW for you. Let us know if other people are influenced by your posts, or ours, so that we can measure outcomes of this project. To leave a comment on this blog you’ll need to enter your name and email address.

Our first step is to record 365 new actions. Our second step will be to aim for 365 new actions in one single day. Imagine if we could do it every day of the year! You can subscribe to receive a daily action from us here
