Act and Hope Will Come
There are some very simple ways to contribute to A Year in a Day – the best way is to copy an action someone else has posted because it demonstrates that people’s actions have impact and each person can inspire another to act.
Today I raised my voice with many others to sign 4 important petitions. Let us know if you’ve been inspired to do so too and add your voice to our A Year In a Day community so we can demonstrate that we want urgent action … at the rate of a whole year in one day!!!!
The second petition I signed was asking the Australian Government to make stronger commitments to reverse the loss of nature by 2030 as world leaders enter critical discussions at the second phase of the United Nations Biodiversity COP this year.
We want Australia to show leadership by committing to:
- Protecting 30% of Australia’s land and 30% of Australia’s oceans by 2030.
- Increasing investment in Indigenous Protected Areas.
- Zero human-induced wildlife extinctions from now on.
By 2030, we can achieve so much for our extraordinary Aussie nature – but only if our government makes the commitment right now.
The third petition I signed was to secure a Global Ocean Treaty at the UN this March. You can sign here too.
The fourth petition I signed was to protect Antarctica. Antarctica regulates our climate and its waters feed the fish that feed our world. This year the international organisation CCAMLR (Commission on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources) has the power to create three marine protected areas: the East Antarctic MPA proposal, the Weddell Sea MPA proposal, and the Antarctic Peninsula MPA proposal – the largest act of ocean protection in history!
I added my name to the petition urging Joe Biden, (President of the United States), Emmanuel Macron (President of France), Olaf Scholz (Chancellor of Germany), Ursula von der Leyen (President of the European Commission), Vladimir Putin (President of Russia), Xi Jinping (President of China), and other leaders from CCAMLR member nations to protect Antarctica’s waters.
Join #AYearInADay Citizen Science Project to see if we can all inspire one another to do more to restore planetary health
We’d love you to collaborate with us and share any actions you take to restore planetary health in the comments below or on our social media. While we welcome you to share ANY ACTION you take to inspire others, we’ll be recording NEW or EXTRA actions that people take as part of our tally, because we’re trying to inspire one another to do more than we’re already doing. Feel free to copy some of the actions our participants have been sharing – the action only needs to be NEW for you. Let us know if other people are influenced by your posts, or ours, so that we can measure outcomes of this project. To leave a comment on this blog you’ll need to enter your name and email address.
Our first step is to record 365 new actions. Our second step will be to aim for 365 new actions in one single day. Imagine if we could do it every day of the year! You can subscribe to receive a daily action from us here
