There is a growing demand for those who are skilled in clothing alteration as clothes are valued and upcycled rather than discarded.

Sherlie McMillan is a professional pattern maker and teacher and will be sharing her skills to train young people to help meet this demand. She has worked in the Clothing industry for over 40yrs with many well known NZ brands: CCC, Macpac, Kathmandu and Icebreaker.

Sherlie’s experience includes teaching industrial machining, setting up off-shore production and pattern making. She encourages sharing and learning in an open and encouraging environment, where no question is a silly one, and enjoys seeing people gaining skills and developing their own styles.

She is also the President of the Rotary Club of Blackheath where she is coordinating a Birds, Bees Butterflies and Bats Project this year!

If you’re interested in upcycling fashion for yourself, or to explore a new income stream, this course will provide you with the skills and support you need to get started.

The Course will provide hands on experience in:

  • Setting up, adjusting and using a sewing machine
  • Handling fabrics
  • Garment fitting and alterations
  • Pattern Development
  • Garment Construction
  • Repair

Sewing machines will be made available, but you are also welcome to bring your own machine.
