How to Build a Survival Garden in the Blue Mountains
A workshop at the Blue Mountains Planetary Health Centre
33-39 Acacia St Katoomba
If you’re a beginner gardener or an experienced gardener wanting to connect with community and learn about growing more unusual seeds or plants, join the Planetary Health Centre for a three hour workshop: How to Build a Survival Garden in the Blue Mountains.
This workshop will be led by Lis Bastian. She co-founded the Blue Mountains Permaculture Institute with Rowe Morrow in 2007 and has been working with the community to run Blackheath Community Farm for over 8 years. For the last 3.5 years she has been the Senior Lead for Blue Mountains City Council's Planetary Health Initiative and is working with volunteers to establish a Planetary Health Garden at the Centre.
She will lead a discussion on how we can work together to make our local food system healthier and more resilient and will share:
· what to plant if you want to harvest fruit all year round in the Mountains
· the 25 lesser known plants that got people through the Great Depression and recipes for how to use them (as well as a few other great survival plants)
• what you can grow that birds and rats won’t steal
· and what you would need to plant if you truly wanted to provide all your nutritional needs to survive on a plant based diet.
Bring crops and seeds to share with the community. There will be seeds, tubers and plants available to purchase on the day.
Cost: $20
