The kids came home this week so I started stacking!
My boys came home for the first time since they’ve had Covid. I’ve been just so ecstatic to see them again, but this morning I found myself asking: how on earth could I squeeze another action to restore planetary health into an already crazy busy day?
As it turned out, I actually did TWO NEW ACTIONS!
- I was inspired by a post we shared recently on turning negative RAT tests into plant labels. The kids coming home meant I suddenly had three negative RAT tests, so it was a simple job to split them open and click them back together to make three new plant labels.
- I then decided to stack onto an existing activity – my daily walk – by spending time with Max, while at the same time increasing what I could achieve on every walk. At the risk of being seriously daggy (he didn’t complain!) I took my mum’s old shopping trolley with me and filled it with gardening gloves, secateurs, bags for collecting rubbish and my dog poo bucket (which is now a recycled plastic bucket with a well-sealed lid!). I managed to pick up plastic rubbish AND filled a bag with thistle heads. Serious stacking!
Thistles are flowering and scattering seed at the moment so it’s a critical time to grab them to stop them spreading into our bushland. You definitely need secateurs and gloves though. It was simple to chop off their heads and drop them into my bag, then pull the plant out. I simply left the rest of the plant in the bush to decompose.
Maxie found the whole process really interesting and even admitted the dog poo container wasn’t as gross as he’d expected!
I also showed him the cow orchids that are flowering at the moment!
Landcare, Bushcare and Swampcare
If you’d like to learn more about protecting and restoring our bushland, Blue Mountains runs lots of different volunteer Landcare, Bushcare and Swampcare Groups which meet regularly and share their passion to protect our beautiful bushland. You can read more here
Join #AYearInADay Citizen Science Project to see if we can all inspire one another to do more to restore planetary health
We’d love you to collaborate with us and share any actions you take to restore planetary health in the comments below or on our social media. While we welcome you to share ANY ACTION you take to inspire others, we’ll be recording NEW actions that people take as part of our tally, because we’re trying to inspire one another to do more than we’re already doing. Feel free to copy some of the actions our participants have been sharing – the action only needs to be NEW for you. Let us know if other people are influenced by your posts, or ours, so that we can measure outcomes of this project. To leave a comment on this blog you’ll need to enter your name and email address.
Our first step is to record 365 new actions. Our second step will be to aim for 365 new actions in one single day. Imagine if we could do it every day of the year! You can subscribe to receive a daily action from us here
